Sweet Refreshment

Each spring in western North Carolina, the oak shothole leafminer fly uses her ovipositor to pierce oak buds and lap up their juice, her mouth being too tiny to bite through the leaf tissue. As the leaves unfurl and grow, these incisions develop into perfectly formed holes.

Sweet Refreshment is a portfolio of six letterpress prints exploring the relationship between the leafminer and the oak trees that sustain her. Found oak leaves are pressure printed and combined with hand-set lead type showing each species name. The title print combines my own writing with small cut-outs that align to the holes in the found leaves.
