In 2023 Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared loneliness a public health epidemic. As someone who has experienced loneliness intimately, I look to the land for comfort. Sixteen Stones is a meditation on stones I’ve encountered, the memories they inspire, and the lessons they can teach.
When it is common to view stone as a lifeless resource useful to power the screens that divert our attention, what if instead we saw a cousin? a teacher? a witness?
