Looking for a monthly project to improve my typesetting skills, I stumbled across The Measure, a new competition in book design. Each month participants were tasked with setting a single chapter from a chosen book at a specified page size.
The inaugural challenge required participants to typeset the first chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I won and was given the opportunity to select the next month's book and judge the entries.
I selected a chapter from The Love Affairs of a Bibliomaniac, an eccentric volume published in 1896. A large and squarish page size required participants to consider multiple columns.
The next winner selected a passage from Dante's Inferno that included both the original Italian and an English translation.
Sadly the competition ended after only three months, but it was great fun while it lasted.
