An experiment in drawing a typeface at human scale, Body Type establishes visual relationships between the formal qualities of letterforms and the innate gestures of the human body.

I drew the typeface Bodoni from memory in black and white house paint with 4 inch brushes, establishing a 1:1 ratio between my body and each letter. The radius of the ‘O’ related directly to the length of my arm, the curve of the ‘J’ originated from the twist in my wrist.
Finally, I compiled the images from each letter into short animations, producing a digital typeface that appears to be drawn as it is typed. In this way, the digital product articulates the process more clearly than the physical artifacts.
